Castor Oil Detox
Castor Oil is a wonder oil full of wellbeing and beauty benefits. It is deeply nourishing and brilliant for the skin, due to it being high in vitamin E, omegas and antioxidants. However, what is perhaps most special, is its ability to promote detoxification of whole-body systems via external application to the liver, with something called a castor oil pack. By stimulating the liver other organs of elimination open-up and release, benefiting digestive, reproductive, and lymphatic systems and the host of ailments associated.
We’ve been a huge fan since being introduced to these by a naturopath some 20 years ago. They are a staple in client plans and can be used daily as part of an intense detox programme, or regularly a couple of times per week or month for maintenance.
Potential benefits of using a castor oil pack
Stimulate the liver to detox and expel toxins
Support digestive health and regular bowel movements
Help balance hormones, regulate menstrual cycles and flow
Reduce inflammation and support inflammatory conditions
Promote deeper more restful sleep
Increased sense of general wellbeing and mood
It is the high ricinoleic acid content in castor oil that is believed to be why it is so effective. Ricinoleic acid is special compound in castor beans that promotes the release of excess toxins in the body.
Modern castor oil packs are a dream to use and minimise the mess. Simply apply the oil to the cotton pad, which ties around the waist, and go to bed. The traditional method includes steeping a muslin cloth in the oil, and applying it to the liver with a thin towel to keep it in place, and a hot water bottle applied over the top. The oil is messy and can stain so recommend wearing an old dressing gown or clothing over the pack to avoid staining bed linen.
The pack we’ve been using over the last few years are from Queen of the Thrones or Castorvida, which have convenient straps to keep it in place.
